I caught myself singing to “King of the Fall” or any older song and it matched up with the new lyrics, if not in melody then in cadence.Īll that being said the album’s strength is in its familiarity, its not my favorite Weeknd album but makes no difference as it will probably make its way into more new listener’s ears than it loses anyway. Abel’s voice is amazing but with such a narrow subject matter the similarities in the vocal melodies become amplified and feel like a rehashing of his old flows. A weariness for romance, love for wealth and drugs, it rebels in its nihilism for one track and on the next begs for sympathy for our Starboy. The songwriting itself was a bit predictable, the composition while competent, doesn’t offer much outside of top 40 and the lyrics are heavy on the ennui of celebrity. That section alone was the standout moment of the album, you get a glimpse into something familiar yet new that unfortunately doesn’t go past this track.
My personal favorite off this album was “False Alarm” while the lyrics don’t offer too much outside of Abel’s usual repertoire, its an artistic risk with the music and with Abel’s typically squeaky clean falsetto going into a vocal fry scream. “True Colors” and “Attention” are modern ballads with minimal instrumentation and carefully placed percussion to make stark palettes for Abel’s voice take over and make you feel, sometimes about love, sometimes about his disconnect with love (his message gets confusing in that sense) There a feature from Future, Kendrick Lamar’s unpredictable cadences in “Sidewalks” and even a Lana del Rey interlude appropriately titled “Star Girl” who featured on his last album.
Not to alienate long time fans, songs like “Party Monster” “Reminder” “Ordinary Life” and “All I Know” cater to the house parties, trap DJs and serve as a…reminder, that The Weekend hasn’t abandoned his roots. There will almost certainly be comparisons to Michael Jackson on songs like these but I think Abel’s earned his own artistic merit.
